Review written by Caroline Högardh, athlete from Sweden - May 2023:

Flagstaff is a running Mecca, runners from all over the world will meet here for altitude spring training camps in order to get ready for the outdoor track season. I think this in itself says a lot about how good this place is for a training camp. The altitude is 2000m (7000ft) which is optimal for endurance training, combine this with absolutely amazing scenery of mountains and endless running trails. The track stadium is top class, as well as well as the gym possibilities. There is also an olympic sized pool if someone needs to use this for cross-training, and AlterG-treadmill opportunities if someone is coming back from injury. As well as top-class chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists to help you recover between the hard training sessions.
The possibility to go down to lower elevation for those harder track sessions is also another great feature, less than an hour south you will find the beautiful Sedona located at about 1400meters (4500ft) and further down just over an hour away you will find Cottonwood which is located at an elevation of about 1033meters (3400ft).

The town itself is a small town, but very cozy and enjoyable. The vibe is cowboy-outdoorsy-route 66- kind of vibe, with lots of friendly people and great food!

The weather will be changing with the seasons

the fall is a lovely time with perfect running weather, the winters can be very snowy and cold (but there is a 300m indoor track and great treadmills), the spring is typically windy but it starts to warm up around March/April, May is very nice and warm around 20-25C degrees. The summers will be hot and monsoon season kicks in around July. The climate is very dry, as this is a high altitude desert, so that is good to remember to keep drinking tons of water to stay hydrated.

It is also good to keep in mind that having a car is to recommend as this will give you the opportunity to explore all the trails, go down to lower elevation, and get around town easily. The public transportation here is not the best, even though they have busses. There is a lot of hotels around town, but I would recommend doing AirBnb or something in those terms to be able to have a kitchen to cook your own food, and more space as well as possibly keeping the costs down.

Overall I would highly recommend Flagstaff, AZ to anyone wanting to go for an altitude training camp, this place is just a wonderful place to train with highly motivating people from all over the world!
